Nunhead: The leafy neighbourhood with Insta famous pub

With spring well on the way and this weekend set to be the first bout of springtime weather for many Brits, plenty of us will be looking for ways to spend the weekend.

If you’re looking for a location to visit in south east London that lets you get outdoors in the fresh air with a great pub to visit, then Nunhead is worth a visit.

Nestled between Dulwich and Forest Hill, Nunhead is well known for its local pubs, and outdoor walking spots like Telegraph Hill offering great views of the city.

Nunhead is within easy access of London, with a train from London Bridge to Nunhead taking just 20 minutes.

Here are some of our favourite things to do on a day out in Nunhead:

Explore its many independent eateries

If you’re feeling peckish, Nunhead is home to a plethora of independent restaurants and cafes to haul up in for a weekend catchup.

Some of our top picks are The Old Nun’s Head pub, where you’ll find traditional Sunday roasts along with a cosy pub vibe, and the Nunhead Gardener, a plant shop-cum-café where you can enjoy a tea and cake surrounded by plants and even pick up some gardening tips.

Take a stroll

Nunhead has plenty of nearby walking spots, including Nunhead Green and neighbouring Peckham Rye Park.

But one of our favourite spots for a stroll is Telegraph Hill Park, where you’ll find amazing views of the London skyline from its vantage points.

On a clear day you’ll be able to spot landmarks like The Shard and St. Paul’s Cathedral from Upper Hill Park.

But if you visit the lower end you’ll find a community garden and children’s play area to pass some time.

If you’re after something a little quieter with lots of interesting architecture, head over to Nunhead Cemetery.

First built in 1840, this Victorian Cemetery is famous for being one of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ cemeteries that were built around London at the time.

Here you’ll find quiet walks, along with many interesting examples of Victorian architecture and stonework to see.

No trip to Nunhead would be complete without a visit to Skehan’s, one of south east London’s most famous pubs.

This pub, which is highly distinctive with its Victorian façade covered in plants, has been heavily photographed and captured by artists.

It’s also a hotspot for instagrammers on account of its quirky appearance, but don’t just go by appearances, as the pub has a mix of food options from Thai food to classic Sunday Roasts and burger nights, making it a great place to stop off at after a walk.
